The first time I heard a great vocalist was
when my grandmother would sing in her sweet and strong voice. She was the
first singer that learned from. She was my all time favorite singer.
I always joined all choirs and choruses
that were available to me throughout my school years. In the regional and
district choruses. We would travel to different schools to perform. That's when
I learned what "on the road" meant. After school was when my life started
to change. Right after high school I joined my first group and fell in
love with the music business. Here's this country girl from North Carolina on
stage performing in a band for the first time. Bands were playing five to
seven nights a week and matinees at this time and I learned so much from each
and everyone I worked with. I listened to singers like Patti Labelle, Aretha
Franklin, Chaka khan, Sarah Vaughn and many more. Each and everyone helped
me to progress with my voice and eventually I developed my own style.
For many years I traveled from state to
state, city to city and worked in different clubs and function halls. I've had
the opportunity to open shows for: Linda Jones, Muddy Waters, the Drifters, Ray,
Goodman, and Brown, Tavares and others. As a result, I met a lot of local
musicians and singers who also helped me to develop my talent. The New Spices,
Abbey, E.C.Smooth, Real Deal, Naville "Chops" Turner are some of the groups that
helped me gain experience as well.
Over the past few years I’ve directed my singing
toward jazz, blues, standards, and country songs. I’ve been working a variety of
venues, from nightclubs to lounges and dinner clubs. I have worked with a
variety of musicians in the New England area. Currently I am scheduled to
perform at several private functions with musicians from the southeastern
Massachusetts area. Keyboardist, Mark Rasmussen is one of the players with whom
I often work. I’ve made it a point to not just sing one kind of music, but to
listen to and sing all types of music.
I give special thanks to my grandmother for her inspiration.
