About the Flag Stand Patio Project

This project is for the creation of a brick patio at the base of the flag stand at 122 Western Ave. The patio will be constructed with recycled material, including bricks, wood, metal, etc. All of the work will be done by volunteers from the artists of Western Ave Artists Studios and others from the community. The idea is to beautify the area around the flag and to provide an outdoor seating area for the artists and visitors of the studios. The site can also act as a destination for visitors to Lowell in general. Some of the many reasons for this project are:

to expedite recyclable materials

to beautify the front area of the Studio building

to create a seating area for guests and visitors

to emphasize the flag and all that it means

to provide for artistic creativity outside of building

to provide an opportunity for neighbors to come together on a community project

The project will be created and directed by Roland Cosby. Every effort will be made to use volunteers from various segments of the community. I will need some businesses from the community to provide some in-kind donations. To start, I will donate as much of my resources as possible, i.e., tools, volunteer labor, promotional elements, etc. An effort will be made to get serious youth workers involved. A considerable network of people and materials will be needed to support the effort. The spark needed to get this project, of course are the bricks. That donation has been made. Some three to four thousand bricks will be needed to complete the project. The great pile of bricks are prominently displayed at the studio. A donation of wooden pallets are there to stack and organize the bricks. Some volunteers have offered various forms of brick cleaning parties that are designed to bring people together to learn about the process of preparing the bricks for the patio and to enjoy social comradery..
