Moments to remember, March 19, 2004
The sensuous, soulful music of this Jersey trio best known for their
"Love On A Two-Way Street" punctuated the charts in the late 60's and early
70's. After changing labels, the group members became Ray, Goodman and Brown
and had a brief resurgence in popularity in 1980 with "Special Lady". In
this 18-track collection from Rhino, are gathered their charted hits plus
other singles and an album cut along with a Harry Ray solo track from his
post-R,G and B era. As such it represents a decent overview of the Moments'
Stang-label recordings and is accompanied by a comprehensive musical history
of the group in the liner notes. Sound quality is adequate considering the
less than state-of-the-art recording equipment used for their earlier tunes.
The first three tracks are in mono with the remaining ones in stereo.
Overall, a well-constructed package and recommended for fans of the Moments'
smooth soul performances. For those interested in the later Ray, Goodman and
Brown-era recordings, there is a Millennium collection now available that
replaces the out-of-print greatest hits CD and serves as a worthwhile
adjunct to this compilation.
